2011-01 Flower Show
Continued from the January 2011 Greenleaf
Flower Show Coming in March
Thursday, March 3rd and Friday, March 4th
The AFGC Judges Council will be holding a Flower Show School Symposium at the Valley Garden Center 1809 N. 15th Ave. Phoenix. The mornings start at 8:00 and those who are not testing finish about 2:45. If you are staying over, you might have time to hurry to the Art or Heard Museum on Central Ave.
The discussion will focus on Horticulture on the first day of the symposium. Marie Harrison, hailing from Florida, will begin the day by talking about colorful bracts often mistaken for flowers. Marie will also discuss how certain houseplants such as Sansevieria and Philodendron are judged in a flower show. The cylindrical leaves of my Sanseveria fanned out and just after Thanksgiving I thought it was growing another leaf. But no, a budded stalk! Hope it will be in bloom in March.
On Friday, March 4, we are fortunate to have Lynn Fronk from Ohio to present “Terrific Tables” for her main topic and her Allied Topic will be “Tantalizing Techniques”. Since most of the flower shows that we have include a section on tables, she will be discussing all of the table types including the newer Capsule Table for One as well as the various Exhibition Tables. This should ease any qualms members have about entering shows. Most people enjoy creating tables and the public certainly enjoys seeing them. So many times someone will have a fantastic design idea; yet will have difficulty with the mechanics. Lynn’s technique section will help you bring your idea to fruition by giving you helpful design tips and new techniques that are being used.
Do you know which of these is an Exhibition Table Type 1 or Type 2? Both were winners of their class at the last Annual Convention.
