The Desert Designers met on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, Globe Room, for an engaging and thought-provoking program focused on Parallel Creative Design Critique.
The program showcased the work of three designers—Carol P., Christine W., and Barb Brumley—who presented their creative interpretations of parallel design for group critique and discussion. Each design demonstrated a strong sense of direction and structure while allowing for individual artistic expression.
Understanding Parallel Creative Design
A parallel creative design features three or more groupings of plant material arranged with a clear parallel placement. Directions may be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal, but the overall effect must remain parallel. Groupings do not need to be evenly spaced, and optional components, connectives at the base, or multiple containers may be used as long as the design reads as a single unified composition.
Designers worked within a 36” wide x 24” deep x 48” high black niche, with complete freedom in theme and overall size. The resulting designs sparked lively conversation and provided valuable learning opportunities for both designers and observers.

The critique format encouraged thoughtful feedback and deeper appreciation of the creative process. The meeting was a wonderful example of how Desert Designers continue to explore bold concepts while supporting growth and learning among members.
During the critique, members also experimented with light and dark background staging panels, exploring how background color can dramatically influence the perception of line, depth, and plant material. The contrasting panels highlighted differences in shadow, spacing, and emphasis, allowing viewers to see how parallel groupings could appear more bold, subtle, or dimensional depending on the backdrop. This comparison sparked thoughtful discussion and reinforced the importance of staging as an integral part of creative design.
