“Keep America Beautiful” is a national nonprofit organization working with local affiliates, volunteers, public agencies and corporate partners to reduce litter, increase recycling to improve communities across America. Their goal is to encourage groups to clean up their local communities and make them more beautiful, cleaner and greener.

Begun in 1953, The National Council of State Garden Clubs, now National Garden Clubs, Inc., was one of the original organizations who helped begin “Keep America Beautiful”. Today, there are 731 affiliates supporting this program who work to improve their local communities through litter removal, tree plantings, beautification of public spaces and much more. Affiliates organize activities within their communities to complete projects that improve their public spaces.

A new project sponsored by “Keep America Beautiful” is called “The Great American Cleanup”. The goal of this program is to remove 25 billion pieces of litter from public spaces, roadways, waterways and parks before America’s 250th birthday on July 4th. Individuals and groups can sign an online pledge to help remove litter and then choose areas in their town where they would like to pick up trash. This would be a great community service activity for a garden club, youth group, or service organization.
