Make and Take Workshops

During the convention, breakout sessions are offered for you to participate in several make and take activities. These hands-on workshops offer a change of pace where you create something special to take home and enjoy.

Floral Design – April 17, 2:30-3:30 pm

Brent Leech, vice-president for the American Institute of Floral Designers (AFID), is leading a hand-on workshop where attendees will create a flower arrangement with materials supplied by AFGC. Brent will offer tips to help arrangers improve their arranging skills. (Pre-registration is required and the cost is $35. Limited to first 40 registrants)

Build an Insect Hotel – April 28, 10:30-11:30 am

Rosemary Wade, AFGC Website Administrator and accredited landscape consultant, is leading a hands-on workshop where attendees will assemble an insect hotel that can house native bees, lacewings, ladybugs or butterflies. (10.4 inches by 3.4 inches by 5.4 inches) It is small enough to fit inside a suitcase for those traveling. You can also take your unassembled insect hotel home and assemble it later. (Pre-registration is required and a fee of $30 for the bee hotel kit)

Floral Make and Take Workshop – April 28, two different sessions, 2:30 and 4:00 pm

Mickie Rustad and Kathie Henderson are leading a workshop where attendees will create a lovely flower arrangement. Both ladies are expert floral designers and will share basic floral design tips to help you create your own arrangement. They will also teach how to make a container from a recycled item. (Pre-registration is required and a fee of $30 for materials. Limited to 40 registrants, 20 in each session)

Multi-Fruit Grafting Techniques – Make and Take a Tomato/Potato Grafted Plant April 29, 8:30-9:45 am

Steve Sheard is a master consulting rosarian with the American Rose Society, a member of the AZ Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers organization, and a member of Tempe Garden Club. Steve will teach attendees the steps of cleft grafting, a common type of grafting used on fruit trees. Participants will graft a tomato to a potato plant using cleft grafting. Everything will be provided for this activity. (Pre-registration is required with a fee of $20. Limited to 15 registrants)
