At the October gathering of the Desert Designers floral study group, members delved into the innovative world of Panel Design, a unique floral design technique that brings a fresh, modern twist to floral arranging. Panel Designs incorporates structural panels as an integral element of the composition, offering endless possibilities for creative expression. With a focus on bold materials, contrasting textures, and dynamic shapes, this approach elevates floral arrangements into creative works of art. For this meeting, members were inspired to break new ground, blending flowers with carefully chosen panels to create striking and unique designs.
Key Characteristics of Panel Designs:
- Use of Panels:
- In Panel Design, one or more panels serve as a foundational element.
- These panels can either be self-supporting or require containers or other devices for support.
- Panel Variety:
- The panel can be made from any material—this could include wood, metal, glass, fabric, or even natural elements like branches or leaves.
- The shape and form of the panel can also vary—it could be solid, transparent, or a combination of both. Think about the interplay between light and shadow or how certain materials contrast with or complement the flowers.
- Versatility:
- The beauty of Panel Design lies in its versatility. You’re not confined to traditional shapes or materials. Instead, you can experiment with geometric shapes, freeform panels, and different textures, allowing for endless possibilities of expression.
Importance of Panels in the Design:
- Structural Role: Panels provide a strong, clean framework for the floral elements, giving the design a contemporary and architectural feel.
- Visual Focus: These panels can help guide the eye and create visual balance within the design. By working with multiple panels or various shapes, you can create interesting focal points or add layers of depth.
Creative Applications:
Panel Design is perfect for more avant-garde or modern settings, such as art exhibitions, special events, or installations where the arrangement itself becomes a statement piece. The materials and composition of the panels, alongside the selected flowers, can evoke different moods—whether elegant, minimalist, or bold.
In conclusion, Panel Design throws off the boundaries of traditional floral arranging by incorporating structural elements that enhance the overall aesthetic. It allows designers to explore new artistic dimensions and challenge conventional design rules.
