As an elementary school teacher, my class pledged Allegiance to the flag each morning and then sang a patriotic song. Each song was sung for a month and then a new song was learned. By the end of the year, my students had memorized twelve patriotic songs to take with them into adulthood.
One of their favorite songs was “What’s More American”. The beginning lyrics to the song are:
“What’s more American than cornflakes
The Fourth of July and Uncle Sam
What’s more American than baseball
I am, I am, I am.”
A special time to celebrate being an American is on the Fourth of July. This Fourth of July will have extra special meaning since it marks America’s 250th birthday as an independent nation.
NGC President Donna Donnelly’s 2025-27 theme is “Plant America for the Next 100 Years”. As part of her theme, there is a project called “Planting America in Red, White and Blue” which encourages garden club members to have a container or flower bed planted with our patriotic colors to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday on the Fourth of July.
In desert areas of Arizona, our garden club members might want to use artificial flowers in a hanging basket or container since our July weather is hot! In cooler areas up north, petunias would make an excellent choice for a patriotic hanging basket of flowers.
Displaying our flag can add another shout-out to America, along with your patriotic flowers on July 4th. I have purchased my flag and will have it flying proudly from the corner of our home.
The lyrics to “What’s More American” are below:
What’s more American than corn flakes?
The Fourth of July and Uncle Sam.
What’s more American than baseball?
I am, I am, I am!
What’s more American than toothpaste?
Rock and Roll, peanut butter, toast and jam.
What’s more American than O.K.?
I am, I am, I am!
The Stars and Stripes, George Washington,
The Capitol Dome and Bubble Gum.
There’s General Grant, and Robert E. Lee,
But most of all you can count on little old…
Me, Me, Me.
What’s more American than ice cream?
Chow mein, pizza pie, Virginia Ham.
What’s more American than bingo?
I am, I am, I am!
Ours is a heritage second to none.
We are a nation united as one.
Our Founding Fathers gave us that start,
And their love for our country lives on in ev’ry heart!
What’s more American than Football?
T.V. and mighty Superman?
What’s more American than saying
I am, I am, I am!
The Bill Of Rights, and Betsy Ross
The Liberty Bell, and Paul Revere’s horse
Ole Santa Claus, and a Christmas tree
But most of all you can count on little ole…
Me, me, me.
What’s more American than praying
In a church of your choice across the land?
What’s more American than saying
I am! I am! I am!
What’s more American that saying
I am! I am! I am!
Wishing you a wonderful Fourth of July, and may we all have a red, white and blue container of flowers displayed outside our home to honor our great country.
