Yuma Orchid and African Violet Society placed Arizona’s first Gold Star Memorial By-Way Marker at the newly built Foothills Park. A dedication ceremony was held that included AFGC state president, Judy Kennedy, and other AFGC officers, Jennifer Moreland, Carol Parrott and Rosemary Wade, along with Western District Director, Lydia Reibel. YOAVS officers attending the dedication were Pam Carpenter, president, Marilyn Whitenton, secretary, Myra Lader, treasurer, and YOAVS members, Rod Hartlieb, Karen Bowen, and Carol Houggard. The city installed three flags behind the marker, making the memorial even more impressive.
Placing Blue Star and Gold Star markers in public areas throughout the United States is an NGC project whose purpose is to honor our military heroes and their families who have protected America throughout our history. Our armed forces are dedicated to upholding America’s democracy and protecting America’s citizens.
The network of markers and plantings surrounding the markers placed throughout America forms a “living memorial” to our armed forces and their families. Garden clubs are encouraged to continue placing markers in prominent areas in their towns to pay homage to those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice defending America.
