This is a story about how one person inspired a town to come together and place a Blue Star Memorial in their town park. Patagonia is situated at 4,050 feet in the Southern part of Arizona, fifteen miles from the Mexican border. It has a population of approximately 804.

Long time Patagonia resident and veteran, Murphy Musick, had a dream. He wanted to honor veterans by placing a Blue Star Memorial in his hometown. In May of 2025, he contacted AFGC to learn what it takes to procure a Blue Star for his community. Overwhelmed by the amount of work and resources it would take, he carried on and constructed a manageable plan, after all he was only one man.

Murphy, rallied and armed with his newly acquired knowledge, set about securing the support of the Town Council, business owners, the Patagonia Museum and the Patagonia Community Gardens. Along the way, he gained the enthusiastic support of approximately 804 residents.

The funds were raised and the town developed the site and installed the Blue Star. Members of the Patagonia Community Gardens sponsored a delightful reception and celebrated the event with the ultimate summer treat, watermelon.

On July 4, 2026, the town of Patagonia dedicated the Blue Star Memorial in their tree lined Park. Approximately 60 people, including their U.S. Representative, Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva, gathered for the event.

The dedication was timed to coincide with the celebration of our beloved Nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. The Blue Star Memorial dedication followed a fun-filled parade.
It was a very special day in Patagonia, and we were honored to be part of this double celebration.

Murphy accomplished this honorable project by inspiring the town through presentations, writing articles for the local newspaper and his personal outreach to interested citizens or anyone that would listen. Patagonia did not have a garden club, and the VFW had disbanded years ago. Murphy was on his own.

This Blue Star project was facilitated by one determined person, Murphy Musick. Imagine, what a Garden Club could do! If your Garden Club is interested in a Blue or Gold Star Memorial contact:
